Topic Sentences
Creating well-developed topic sentences for an argument body
paragraph
LOCATION:
The very
first sentence of any body paragraph will be the topic sentence. The topic sentence serves a specific purpose—to
introduce the topic point for that one body paragraph—and therefore, it must
start the paragraph clearly, asserting one sub-point from the thesis statement.
CONTENT:
In an argument essay, each body paragraph has a clear purpose: to argue a sub-point
from the thesis, develop the sub-point, support the argument, and explain the validity
of how the outside sources support the subpoint…before wrapping it all up in a
closing sentence. Therefore, it is
essential that each body paragraph in an argument essay begin with clear
content in the topic sentence—the first sentence of the body paragraph.
· Body
paragraphs begin with a clear argument sentence: called the topic
sentence.

The topic sentence must stay on a single topic—the
main point of your body paragraph.
o
The Topic sentence must argue one sub-point that
stems directly from the thesis statement in the introduction
paragraph.
o
There will be NO source usage in a topic
sentence.
o
Topic sentences are original argument content by the author.
o
They are written in 3rd person voice.
o
They contain NO questions.
o
They contain NO contractions.
o
They work with the closing sentence: a sentence that
reflects back to the topic sentence of the body paragraph.
